Plane Spotting London Heathrow: The Complete Guide to LHR's Best Locations
London Heathrow is the most-spotted airport in Europe. Two parallel runways, one of the world's heaviest widebody fleets, and a lineup of airline registrations that reads like a collector's checklist. On a good day at LHR you'll see Emirates A380s, Cathay Pacific A350s, Singapore Airlines 777s, and enough 747 freighters to keep you busy between the passenger waves.
This guide covers everything: where to go, when to show up, how to pick your spot based on the wind, and what to expect in the sky.
The LHR Setup: Two Runways, Non-Stop Traffic
Heathrow operates two parallel east-west runways:
- 09L/27R โ the northern runway
- 09R/27L โ the southern runway
Under normal westerly winds (the UK default), aircraft land on the 27s and depart on the 27s in alternation โ a system called "westerly operations." Under easterly winds (less common but not rare), the configuration flips to the 09s.
This matters enormously for spotters: it determines which end of the airport your photo opportunities will be at. Get the wind wrong and you'll spend the day shooting tail-ons.
The 5 Best Spotting Locations at LHR
All five are publicly accessible. None require a ticket, airport pass, or special permission.
1. Myrtle Avenue, Hatton โ The Gold Standard
What it is: A residential road that runs directly under the 27L approach path. Aircraft pass overhead at approximately 60 feet on finals โ you can read the belly registration, count the gear bogies, and hear the engines at full effect.
What you get: Tight landing shots, gear-down arrivals, extreme low approaches. When winds are westerly and 27L is active for arrivals, this spot delivers the most dramatic aircraft photography at any civilian location in the UK.
How to get there:
- By car: Exit the M25 at Junction 14, take the A30 toward Hatton. Myrtle Avenue is signposted off the A30 just before the airport perimeter. Parking is on-street.
- By tube: Hatton Cross station (Piccadilly Line, Zone 6) is a 15-minute walk.
Best for: Landing shots, low pass photography, engine detail on widebodies.
Limitation: Only works during westerly operations (27L arrivals). Easterly ops = nothing overhead.
2. Hatton Cross Tube Station โ The Accessible Option
What it is: The last Piccadilly Line station before the airport terminals (Zone 6). From here, a short walk along the perimeter road gives you elevated views across the southern runway.
What you get: Good general views of southern runway operations, taxiing aircraft, and decent approach shots. Not as dramatic as Myrtle Avenue but much easier to reach without a car โ and the perimeter road walk opens up multiple angles.
How to get there: Direct from central London on the Piccadilly Line. No car needed. Journey time from central London approximately 50 minutes.
Best for: No-car spotters, getting oriented on your first LHR visit, combining with a Myrtle Avenue walk.
Tip: Walk west from the station along the perimeter road for progressively better views toward the 27L threshold.
3. Renaissance Hotel Multi-Storey Car Park โ The Elevated View
What it is: The Renaissance London Heathrow Hotel has a public multi-storey car park adjacent to the Bath Road. The upper levels offer outstanding elevated views of both runways and the southern taxiways.
What you get: A panoramic perspective you can't get at ground level. Widebodies on the taxiways, both runway thresholds, and a clear sightline to Terminal 5 stands. Exceptional for wide shots and identifying aircraft on the ground.
Practical note: The car park charges standard rates. Budget for 2โ3 hours minimum. Bring a long lens for the runway work โ you're looking across a distance.
Best for: Ground movement photography, aircraft ID on stands, elevated runway shots, keeping dry in the rain.
4. Bath Road / Terminal 5 South Side โ The 27R Threshold
What it is: The public road running along the south side of the airport near Terminal 5. This area puts you close to the 27R threshold โ the northern runway's western end.
What you get: Arrivals on 27R passing low overhead, plus views of T5 stands where British Airways' heavies park. A380s, 787s, and 777s regularly sit on T5 stands within telephoto range.
How to get there: Car is easiest โ exit M25 J14, follow signs toward T5. Limited roadside stopping; use layby areas and be mindful of no-stopping zones.
Best for: British Airways widebody shots, 27R arrivals, T5 ramp photography.
5. Northern Perimeter Road โ Easterly Ops and Departures
What it is: The road running along the north perimeter of the airport, roughly parallel to the northern runway (09L/27R).
What you get: During easterly operations, this is where the action moves. Aircraft depart on 09R and 09L toward the west, banking right after takeoff โ the Northern Perimeter Road gives you a clean view of climbout and initial turn. During westerly ops it's quieter but still good for taxiway views.
Best for: Easterly operations, departure shots, takeoff sequences, northern runway activity.
Choosing Your Spot: It's All About the Wind
The single most important pre-session check is wind direction. LHR operates almost exclusively from one end based on the wind.
| Wind Direction | Runway Config | Best Spots | |---------------|---------------|------------| | Westerly (W, SW, NW) โ most common | 27s for arrivals + departures | Myrtle Avenue (27L arrivals), Bath Road T5 area (27R arrivals) | | Easterly (E, SE, NE) โ less common | 09s for arrivals + departures | Northern Perimeter Road (09R/09L departures), Hatton Cross area |
How to check: Use Windy (windy.com or the app) for wind direction at LHR. Anything with a westerly component = head to Myrtle Avenue. A persistent easterly forecast? Northern Perimeter Road is your base.
You can also cross-check on Flightradar24 โ look at which runway aircraft are landing on in the live view before you leave the house. See our How to Use Flightradar24 for Plane Spotting guide for the full workflow.
Best Times to Visit
LHR never really stops, but two windows consistently deliver the highest traffic density:
06:30 โ 09:00 โ Long-haul arrivals wave This is when the overnights come in. Flights from Asia (Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Beijing) and the Americas (New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, Dubai) are all on approach. The A380s and 777s are stacked up. The light is good for photography from the south side, and the air is cooler and cleaner. This is the session to set your alarm for.
14:00 โ 17:00 โ Second wave Midday lull gives way to an afternoon surge: European connections returning, more long-haul arrivals from the Middle East and Africa, and the early departure push for transatlantic evening flights. Good mix of narrowbodies and widebodies.
Avoid: 11:00โ13:00 (relatively quiet, harsh midday light), and late night (curfew restrictions mean very limited operations after 23:00).
Aircraft to Look For
LHR's widebody dominance is what makes it special. These are the regulars:
A380s: Emirates (the most frequent A380 operator at LHR by far), British Airways (own large fleet), Qatar Airways. Every Emirates A380 deserves a shot โ the livery works in any light.
Boeing 777: Emirates (again โ triple-daily at minimum), British Airways (large 777-200/300 fleet), Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines. The 777's distinctive six-wheel main bogies are visible on approach.
Airbus A350: Cathay Pacific (A350-900/1000), Singapore Airlines, Finnair, TAM/LATAM. The A350's composite-heavy construction means no rivets and very clean fuselage lines โ beautiful in photography.
747 Freighters: Cargolux, Korean Air Cargo, Air China Cargo. Passenger 747s are rare now, but freighters still operate regularly at LHR.
Bonus: Keep an eye out for visiting widebodies from carriers that operate LHR less frequently โ Ethiopian, Philippine Airlines, Air India's 787s, and the occasional charter heavy.
